Essy's Essentials

The 20-Minute Golden Hour Reset

Set at La Scala Bassa

A perfume bottle and a bowl of figs on a stone windowsill at golden hour, a sheer curtain moving in the breeze, a coastal village and the sea visible through the open window.

Twenty quiet minutes to close the laptop, open a window and arrive properly in the evening.

The evening does not have to be earned. Sometimes it only has to be allowed in.

At a Glance

  1. Open the window.
  2. Pour something cold.
  3. Light one candle.
  4. Notice five sensory details.
  5. Write three lines: what to leave, what to bring, what you noticed.
  6. Choose one kind next action.

There is a particular hour in Cortelume when the village changes its mind about the day.

The stone steps of La Scala Bassa turn warm underfoot. The voices from the piazza become softer. Linen curtains lift in open windows, and down by Terrazza del Porto, the first candles are lit before anyone is ready to call it evening.

This ritual is for that in-between moment.

Not quite day. Not quite night. Not productive. Not performative. Just twenty minutes to let your shoulders drop, your thoughts settle and the day become something gentler before you continue.

You do not need a perfect terrace, a harbour view or a summer house above a piazza. You only need a small corner, a little light and the decision not to rush yourself for twenty minutes.

What You’ll Need

  • A cold drink: sparkling water, iced coffee, limonata, herbal iced tea or something with lemon
  • A candle, preferably something soft and warm rather than overpowering
  • A notebook or small piece of paper
  • A pen
  • A comfortable chair, window seat, balcony, garden step or quiet corner
  • Optional: perfume, hand cream or a light summer body oil
  • Optional: the Cortelume at Golden Hour playlist
Minute 00-03

Open the evening

Open a window, step outside, or move to the softest light in the room.

Do one small thing that signals the day is shifting: loosen your hair, take off your work jewellery, change into something softer, place your phone face down, or clear one corner of the table.

Pour your drink slowly.

This is not about making the moment beautiful for anyone else. It only has to feel good to be inside it.

Minute 03-07

Light the candle

Light one candle and let that be enough.

In Cortelume, the candles at Terrazza del Porto are always lit a little too early - while the sky is still bright, while the glasses are still cold, while no one has decided what the evening will become.

Let the flame mark a small boundary between what has happened today and what you are carrying into the evening.

Ask yourself: what can I leave behind before the day follows me any further?

You do not need to answer perfectly. Just notice what comes up.

Minute 07-12

Return to the senses

For five minutes, come back to the physical world.

Notice: the temperature of your drink, the light on the wall, the scent of the candle, your skin, the air, your home, the texture of your clothes, the sound furthest away from you, the sound closest to you.

Then take one slow breath and think: I am here now. The day is allowed to soften.

This is the quiet centre of the ritual.

Minute 12-17

Write the small note

Take your notebook or piece of paper and write three short lines.

One thing I am leaving in the day: ...

One thing I want to bring into the evening: ...

One small beautiful thing I noticed today: ...

Keep it simple. One sentence is enough. A few words are enough.

In Cortelume, not every note becomes a mystery. Some notes are simply a way of proving to yourself that you were paying attention.

Minute 17-20

Choose the evening gently

Before you stand up, choose one small next action.

Not a full plan. Not a reset of your entire life. Just the next kind thing.

Examples: make a simple dinner, take a short walk, put on the playlist, wash your face slowly, apply perfume before dinner even if you are staying home, send a message to someone you love, read one chapter, set the table properly, just because.

Blow out the candle only when you are ready to move.

Let the evening begin without being chased.

In Cortelume, this ritual belongs to the walk between La Scala Bassa and Terrazza del Porto: the lower steps, the harbour air, the first candle on the table, the feeling that the day has finally stopped asking anything from you.

At home, it can happen anywhere the light finds you.
