Some areas of home administration need more than a monthly glance.
An Annual Household Review creates one moment to look at the broader picture. It is an opportunity to check whether documents are current, services still suit the household and recurring costs remain intentional.
Choose one consistent month each year. January may feel natural, but any quieter month can work. The best review moment is the one you are likely to repeat.
1. Review the Household Structure
Ask: have any household members moved in or out? Have contact details changed? Have work, study or travel patterns changed? Are responsibilities still divided appropriately? Do emergency contacts remain current?
A system should reflect the household as it exists now.
2. Review Home and Property Documents
Check rental or mortgage documents, home and contents insurance, maintenance records, property-related charges, service agreements, important guarantees and open repair issues.
Confirm that current documents are stored in the correct place.
3. Review Utilities and Recurring Services
Check energy, water, internet, phone, waste or municipal services, and security or maintenance services.
Ask: does the contract still fit current usage? Is the tariff or package still appropriate? Is a renewal approaching? Are there unused extras?
Do not change a service solely because another option appears cheaper. Consider reliability, conditions, notice periods and actual household needs.
4. Review Insurance
List active policies. Check coverage, renewal dates, household changes, major purchases, travel plans, vehicle changes and duplicate coverage.
For important financial or legal decisions, use official information or qualified advice. The household review is a preparation tool, not a substitute for professional guidance.
5. Review Subscriptions and Memberships
Ask: was this used during the past year? Would we choose it again today? Is a lower-cost version sufficient? Does it duplicate another service? Is cancellation straightforward?
Keep what still provides genuine value. Remove what has become invisible.
6. Review Maintenance
Check the status of heating or cooling systems, smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms, vehicle servicing, appliances, roof, gutters or exterior areas where relevant, garden or balcony, safety equipment, and major repair plans.
Create a realistic maintenance calendar for the coming year.
7. Review Important Documents
Check expiry or renewal dates for passports, driving licences, permits, certificates, membership cards, insurance cards and travel documents.
Add reminders several months before expiry where renewal may take time.
8. Review Digital Access and Security
Check account recovery information, multi-factor authentication, shared access, old accounts, household cloud storage and important backups.
Do not record passwords in the annual review document. Use an appropriate password-management method.
9. Review the Household Archive
Remove obvious duplicates. Archive expired documents that must be retained. Securely dispose of information that no longer needs to be kept.
Do not apply generic retention periods to legal, tax or financial records without checking the relevant official requirements.
10. Choose Three Annual Priorities
Examples: complete a major repair, build a clearer emergency file, review all household insurance, reduce unused subscriptions, organise appliance warranties, prepare for an upcoming move, update important personal documents.
Limit the list to three meaningful outcomes.
