Subscriptions, Contracts and Renewals
A quiet review system for the recurring commitments that are easiest to overlook.
Recurring payments are convenient because they happen automatically.
That same convenience makes them easy to forget. A subscription or contract may continue long after it stops providing meaningful value.
The purpose of a recurring-cost review is not to cancel everything. It is to make every ongoing commitment visible and intentional.
Create One Recurring-Cost Overview
Include streaming services, news and publications, software, cloud storage, gym or wellness memberships, professional memberships, telephone and internet, insurance, energy contracts, maintenance agreements, delivery subscriptions, clubs and leisure services, and other recurring payments.
For each item, record the service or provider, its purpose, payment frequency, approximate amount, renewal month, notice period where relevant, responsible person and review decision.
Do not include complete payment details in an unsecured overview.
Check for Overlap
Look for several services serving the same purpose - multiple streaming platforms, several cloud-storage subscriptions, duplicate insurance coverage, apps with similar functions, memberships used for the same benefit.
Overlap may be intentional, but it should be recognised.
Review Annual Renewals Early
Create a reminder before the renewal or notice deadline. This allows time to check new conditions, review usage, compare alternatives, ask questions and cancel correctly.
Avoid making a rushed decision after an automatic renewal.
Record Cancellation Evidence
When cancelling: save the confirmation, record the effective date, check for final payments.
Remove future reminders once the cancellation is complete. Retain relevant evidence until the matter is clearly closed.

Quarter 1
- Review annual plans and professional memberships.
Quarter 2
- Review travel, leisure and seasonal services.
Quarter 3
- Review household and digital subscriptions.
Quarter 4
- Review services likely to renew around the new year.
A Few Questions First
- Do we still use this?
- Does it still provide enough value?
- Would we choose it again today?
Pair It With
Recurring costs should not disappear into the background.
A quiet review returns them to the category they belong in: a conscious choice.
