Skincare routines often expand more easily than they contract. A product is added for one season. A treatment remains after the concern has changed. Two moisturisers become four. A half-used serum is kept because it may become useful again.

The Seasonal Skincare Review creates a regular point of decision. Four times a year, review skin comfort, product function, seasonal conditions, current concerns, and expiry and condition. The aim is not to create a new routine every quarter - it is to keep the existing one relevant.

Step 1: Assess Current Comfort

Ask whether the skin feels comfortable after cleansing, whether there is persistent tightness, whether there is increased oiliness, whether sensitivity has changed, whether there are areas of dryness, whether makeup applies well, and whether treatments are tolerated.

Comfort is an important measure of whether the routine remains suitable.

Step 2: Review Each Product by Role

For every active product, identify its function, when it is used, how often it is used, whether it is effective, and whether it duplicates another product.

Products without a clear role should not remain in the routine automatically.

Step 3: Check Safety and Condition

Review expiry, period after opening, changes in smell, changes in colour, texture separation, packaging damage, contamination, and sun protection dates.

Dispose of unsuitable products according to local guidance.

Step 4: Consider the Next Season

Review likely changes in temperature, humidity, sun exposure, wind, heating, travel and lifestyle.

Choose only the adjustments that respond to these conditions.

Step 5: Simplify Before Adding

Before buying a new product, ask whether the current routine can be adjusted through frequency, whether using less of one product would help, whether a lighter or richer texture could replace rather than join the current option, and whether the concern is persistent enough to require a new product.

Simplification often resolves discomfort created by excessive layering.

Step 6: Create the Seasonal Routine Card

Write the routine in two columns. Morning: cleanse or refresh, treatment where used, moisturise, protect. Evening: remove makeup and protection, cleanse, treatment where used, moisturise.

Keep the card simple enough to follow without reference to several product instructions each day.

Step 7: Choose One Review Date

Set the next seasonal review. This prevents constant day-to-day changes based on minor fluctuations.

Adjust sooner only when there is irritation, a product is unsuitable, professional advice recommends change, or the environment changes significantly.

Pair It With

The Seasonal Skincare Review template asks nine short prompts each quarter: the season, current skin comfort, what is working, what is not working, products to finish, products to stop, the seasonal adjustment, the routine card, and the next review date.

A good skincare routine is not fixed forever. It changes carefully - one observation, one useful adjustment, one season at a time.
