The beginning of a season is not always obvious. The calendar changes before the weather does. Summer lingers. Spring arrives unevenly. Autumn appears first in the evening light. Winter may begin with rain rather than snow.
A Seasonal Baking Ritual creates one tangible marker. The oven is switched on. A familiar recipe returns. The first pears, berries, citrus or rhubarb are brought into the kitchen.
The ritual does not need to become a large event. Its value comes from repetition.
Add One New Seasonal Ingredient
Alongside the familiar recipe, try one smaller variation - a different pear, a new spice, local honey, a new nut, fresh herbs, or a seasonal preserve.
Do not change the entire recipe. One small experiment keeps the ritual alive while preserving familiarity.
Prepare the Kitchen
Before beginning: clear the worktop, bring out the required tin, check pantry ingredients, choose a playlist, open a window where suitable, and set aside enough time for cooling.
The preparation is part of the transition.
Create One Shared Moment
The bake may be shared at the family table, with a neighbour, during afternoon coffee, on a walk, at a small gathering, or with someone who could use a quiet kindness.
The sharing does not need to be formal. A wrapped slice may be enough.
Record the Season
Keep one short note - date, recipe, ingredient used, weather, who shared it, and one thing to repeat next year. A photograph may also become part of the seasonal record.
Do not turn the ritual into a documentation project. One image or sentence is sufficient.
Close the Kitchen
After the bake: store leftovers, wash the main tools, return ingredients, wipe the worktop, and leave the cake, bread or cookies ready to be enjoyed.
The kitchen should feel complete rather than abandoned after the creative part.

The Seasonal Baking Ritual template: season - spring, summer, autumn or winter. Signature bake - recipe selected. One new ingredient - chosen intentionally. Atmosphere - playlist, drink, light. Sharing moment - person or occasion. Seasonal note - one sentence to remember.
A season becomes easier to notice when it has a taste, a scent and a recipe that returns.
The first slice marks the moment. The year has moved again.
