THE AMBERFELL ARCHIVE · CASE 01

The First Disturbance

On the morning of 9 October, a name appeared in the Amberfell Guest Register.

The difficulty is that it had been written there exactly one hundred years too early.

DOCUMENT 01 · GUEST REGISTER

The register lives in a drawer in the hall.

It is mostly what you would expect: names, dates, the occasional enthusiastic comment about breakfast.

On the evening of 8 October, this page contained nothing unusual.

By morning, it did.

  • 3 October 1926Mr & Mrs Arthur BellLondon
  • 5 October 1926Margaret H. WrenBath
  • 7 October 1926Thomas AldridgeYork
  • 9 October 1926Evelyn ValeRoom 7Returned, as promised.
  • 12 October 1926Mr James WhitmoreOxford

At first, the sensible explanation seemed obvious.

An old entry. Previously overlooked.

Slightly odd, perhaps. Not exactly grounds for abandoning the house.

Then we found the photograph.

DOCUMENT 02 · PHOTOGRAPH · OCTOBER 1926

The photograph was filed three drawers below the register, inside an envelope marked simply:

AUTUMN — 1924–1929

The handwriting is not the same as the entry in the Guest Register. We checked. This was the point at which I made coffee.

What We Know So Far

  1. 01Someone named Evelyn Vale appears to have stayed at Amberfell in October 1926.
  2. 02At least two separate documents associate her with Room 7.
  3. 03Amberfell has six upstairs bedrooms.
  4. 04There is no evidence that it has ever had a seventh.
  5. 05The Guest Register entry was not visible on 8 October.

INCIDENT LOG · 9 OCTOBER

11:47 PM

At 11:47 that evening, the light above the upstairs landing came on.

This would not normally be worth recording.

Except the upstairs landing has no light.

There is a wall lamp at either end of the corridor. Both were off.

This one appeared between them.

It stayed on for eleven seconds.

Long enough to illuminate a door.

Then the corridor went dark again.

There is no door there now.

DOCUMENT 03 · FIRST FLOOR PLAN · DATE UNKNOWN

We went looking for an explanation.

We found one.

Unfortunately, it made things worse.

The Floor Plan

DOCUMENT 03 · FIRST FLOOR PLAN · DATE UNKNOWN

FOUNDOPEN
An old architectural first-floor plan of Amberfell, showing numbered rooms along a corridor and a small rectangular space at the end marked only "7".
The current wall runs directly through it.

I preferred it when we simply had a strange light.

The Second Entry

The Guest Register was checked again the following morning.

Evelyn Vale’s entry was still there.

Something else had been added underneath it.

She was not alone.

The Amberfell Archive

Case 01 remains open.

No further entries were recorded that night.

At least none that remained there by morning.
